You can set up a successful online business in 10 steps

You are looking for more freedom and you dream of being able to work wherever and whenever you want, so you are now 100% sure: you are going to start an online business. But how do you approach that? Because it often seems more difficult than it actually is, I have prepared a handy step-by-step plan for you. Follow these 10 steps and within no time you will have a successful, profitable online business.
STEP 1: CONSIDER WHAT YOU LIKE AND WHAT YOU ARE GOOD IN
If you want your business to be successful, it is important that you choose a topic that you are passionate about and that you are good at. If you want to earn money, simply following your passion is not enough; to ensure that people want to pay for your knowledge, you must be able to show them that you have a lot of experience with the subject or know a lot about it.
STEP 2: CONSIDER WHO YOU WILL HELP
If you try to address everyone, you will ultimately not appeal to anyone. And if people don't feel attracted, they won't buy your products either, because they don't think it's meant for them. Therefore make sure that you choose a specific target group. The better you know who your ideal customer is, the easier it is to attract the right people, create valuable content for them and build a bond with them.
STEP 3: BUILD A WEBSITE
In order to start an online business, you must, of course, have a website. You need web hosting and a domain name for this. The web hosting ensures that your website continues to work and that you can put data on it. Your domain name is the URL of your website, in my case www.digitaledromers.nl.
STEP 4: CREATE VALUABLE CONTENT
To then attract people to your website and make sure they keep coming back for more, you have to fill it with great content. Write articles that are relevant and valuable to your target audience and that helps them reach their goals and solve their problems. If writing is not entirely your thing, you can of course also get started with video or audio, such as a podcast.
STEP 5: GET STARTED WITH SOCIAL MEDIA
By being present on social media you make yourself visible to your target group, you can present yourself as an expert and you can distinguish yourself from the competition. You can also use social media to get in touch with your target group, to inspire your target group and to promote your content and products. I recommend focusing on Instagram to get in touch with your target audience and on Pinterest to attract traffic to your website.
STEP 6: GET STARTED WITH SEO
Simply put, SEO is applying certain tactics to ensure that Google sees your article as better than the rest, leading you higher in the search results and giving you a constant stream of free traffic to will attract your website. You can improve your SEO by, among other things, using relevant keywords in your articles, ensuring that other websites link to your website and in your articles referring to other pages or articles on your website.

STEP 7: START AN EMAIL LIST
To make your online business a success, building an e-mail list must be your priority. Email marketing is by far the most effective way to sell your products and because it is so personal, it is also one of the best ways to work on relationships with your target audience and ensure that they see you as an expert. You can grow your email list by attracting people with valuable content to your website and then offering them freebies in exchange for their email address.
STEP 8: CONSIDER HOW YOU WANT TO EARN MONEY
Now that you have valuable articles on your website, attracting more and more people to your website and building an e-mail list, it's time for the final step: make money.
The four most common options for earning money are advertising, sponsored articles, affiliate marketing, and selling digital products. Because digital products are the most profitable option for almost every niche, you can add a lot of value with digital products and you don't need tens of thousands of visitors to earn a full-time income with it, so I recommend focusing on that.
STEP 9: MAKE YOUR FIRST DIGITAL PRODUCT
The best-known options for digital products are ebooks and courses and I also recommend choosing one of these two options for your first product. Ebooks are relatively easy, quick and often free to make. Creating a course takes a lot more time and you also have to pay for a platform. For courses, you can ask for a higher price, which means that courses will generally provide you with more than ebooks.
To ensure that you make a product that your target group actually wants, it is important that you solve a common problem of your target group in your product. So do not think of a subject based on your own interests, but choose a subject that you know for sure that your target group wants to learn more about.
After you have decided what you want to make and which topic you want to cover, it is important that you validate your idea. This means that you first ask your target group whether they are actually waiting for the product. This will prevent you from working for weeks or months on a product that no one ultimately wants to buy. You can, among other things, validate your idea by having your target group fill out a survey or by requesting it directly in an e-mail or via social media.
When people are enthusiastic about your idea you can start making your product.

STEP 10: PROMOTE YOUR PRODUCT
When you have created a fantastic product, it is time to promote it. As I said, email marketing is by far the best way to promote your products, because the people on your list are generally people who trust you, who you see as an expert and who want to learn more from you. 
You can simply email the people on your list that you have created a product, but in general, it doesn't result in many sales. You can better "warm-up" people with free webinars, e-mail courses or challenges and refer to your product at the end.

You can choose to promote your freebie and your product once - for example, people can only sign up for your membership site one week a year - but you can also leave it on your website. If you opt for the latter, it is smart to fully automate the process. This allows you to continue to sell your products without having to invest time and energy.
